Extensive budget, forecast, and reporting activity using Excel, Access and PowerPoint for reports and presentation. Met all goals for a rapidly growing branch (one of 50 IT branches) in CDI Corporation. Skills required were financial, managerial, marketing, and human resource related.
Consultant, Technology implementation and management (July 1992 – present)
Consult with clients on e-commerce, web design, technical marketing, CAD/CAM issues, networking, security, and technology implementation. Skills used are technical and managerial. Produced historical graphics for Walnut Street Bridge and related river-walk. Garnet Chapin (brother) won American Institute of Architects award for project. Business Data Resource Company (January, 2002 - Present)
Internet services for legal professionals and the general public, providing court dockets (password protected) for legal professionals and information about local professionals and legal issues (court personnel, rules and forms) for the public and the Chattanooga Times-Free Press. CourtRunner site uses internet automation technology to update information from local court clerks. A weekly report on new bankruptcy cases is printed in the local paper, derived from court records and parsed to eliminate privileged information. Technology Incubator Project (June, 2000 - Present)
Create local interest and support for a technology incubator, or a group of incubators, in the Chattanooga area. Assemble resources (office space, investors, and communications) and candidate (start-up or new venture for established) firms. Created and maintain Chattanooga Technology Council website for the Chattanooga Engineers Club and the Mayor’s Office of the City of Chattanooga. This site is used for local and state technology development projects, event communication within the technology community, and a directory listing of technology oriented firms in the Chattanooga area. Started and operated wood turning and wood carving gallery and tool store. Store is located in the North Shore area. Skills in marketing, purchasing and retail operation.
Regional Vice-president, Applied Software Technology, Atlanta, GA (1991 - July, 1992)
Applied Software is one of the five largest dealers in the U.S. in AutoCAD and engineering computers, such as Sun Microsystems. I was responsible for the State of Tennessee, with the exception of educational sales. The company is privately held. Skills used were sales and marketing, managerial and technical.
President, Chattanooga Computer Center, Chattanooga, TN (1984 - 1991)
The above two businesses were related. I was, first, the president of my own firm, which specialized in engineering computers (Hewlett-Packard and Sun Microsystems) and Computer Aided Design (AutoCAD) throughout east and middle Tennessee. In 1991, the operations of Chattanooga Computer Center were sold to, and merged with, Applied Software Technology, Inc., in Atlanta. Applied Software was one of the top five CAD firms in the US, at that time and now. Chattanooga Computer Center was also the Hewlett-Packard dealer for the area, providing sales, technical support, and supplies for the Hewlett-Packard line of products including plotters and laser printers. We sold and installed Sun Microsystems line of UNIX workstations and AutoCAD for about eight different platforms (types of computer). Skills included financial, managerial, marketing and technical.
President and Co-owner, Rock City Gardens, Inc.* Lookout Mountain, GA (1973 - 1984)
Managed and operated a large, nationally known tourist attraction and several related subsidiaries. Prepared extensive financial plans for a seasonal business that did 80% of the year’s business in 100 days each year. Cash flow forecasting, using various methodologies including Box-Jenkins forecasting, was a vital function. Designed and wrote (in RPG) the programs for financial accounting, payroll, inventory, painting records (the world famous Rock City barns) and other business applications. I won two awards (Business in the Arts, Honorable Mention) from Forbes magazine for computer programs developed for the Chattanooga Allied Arts organization. More than 100 employees, seven pension, profit-sharing and benefit (ERISA compliant) plans were administered and reported to Federal specifications. Skills required were financial, accounting, managerial, marketing and human resource.
* Rock City Gardens, Inc. was the holding company for six subsidiaries which included the well-known tourist attraction on Lookout Mountain, real estate interests, an Alabama attraction, Sequoyah Caverns, a Florida Landscaping Company and Nursery, advertising and broadcasting subsidiaries. The company was sold in 1984.
General Manager WLOM-FM (1967 - 1973) and Assistant to President, Rock City
Operated FM broadcast station in Chattanooga market as General Manager and Chief Engineer. Converted transmitter to stereo and installed comprehensive broadcast automation (Shafer). Skills were technical (electronics), managerial, financial, human resource, and accounting.
